Carina Region
The Carina Nebula region is a rich stellar nursery in the southern constellation Carina, hosting several prominent nebulae and star clusters. NGC 3576, known as the Statue of Liberty Nebula (bottom left), is a bright emission nebula approximately 9,000 light-years away, notable for its dark dust formations that resemble the Statue of Liberty. It is a massive star-forming region with embedded O-type and B-type stars, sculpting the surrounding gas with intense radiation and stellar winds.
RCW 49, commonly called the Whirling Dervish Nebula (top right), lies about 13,700 light-years away and is associated with the Westerlund 2 star cluster. This H II region contains two Wolf-Rayet stars (WR 20a and WR 20b) and over 3,000 stars, including massive O-type supergiants. The nebula's dynamic structure, resembling a whirling dervish, is shaped by powerful stellar winds interacting with surrounding gas.
These objects—NGC 3576 (Statue of Liberty Nebula), RCW 49 (Whirling Dervish Nebula), and the Wolf-Rayet stars in Westerlund 2—are all part of the larger Carina complex, a region of intense star formation and dramatic interstellar activity.
